Unplug and connect through old time music & dance

Lake Missoula Old Time creates opportunities to engage with one another, face to face, in real time, around old time music and dance. Learning old time music by ear, playing it, and dancing to it is our bread and butter.

Share tunes at one of our jams, learn to play the banjo and explore the percussive possibilities of clogging at one of our workshops, or do-si-do away an evening at one of our beginner-friendly square dances. Our events are free or low-cost and are open to everyone — at all levels of experience. Unplug and connect with your community through old time music and dance.

Join members of Lake Missoula Old Time at Dare to be Square West!

Dare to be Square West - founded in 2003 by Phil Jameson - is a weekend of square dance and music workshops, dancing, jamming, and fun with a mission to promote and preserve traditional square dancing.

To support our growing old time and square dancing community in Missoula, Lake Missoula Old Time is offering a limited number of mini-grants. The goal of the LMOT Mini-Grant is to support beginning and continuing square dance callers, musicians, and dance organizers in the Missoula region as they develop and hone their calling, square dance playing, dancing, and organizing craft. Mini-grants can be used to offset costs associated with attending the workshop, including travel expenses, lodging, workshop registration, and food expenses.

Mini-grant applications are due by 11:59pm October 1, 2025. Applicants will be notified of their award status by October 8.

Mini-grant requirements and eligibility criteria:

  • reside in the Missoula region

  • attend Dare to be Square West in Berkeley, CA (November 7-9, 2025)

  • participate in Dare to be Square West workshops
